The common theme behind all of the contributors’ stories is that mainstream schooling needs to be transformed—how we think about and implement education, learning, and teaching needs to change.
This book is about celebrating and understanding the diversity of possibilities in the hopes that people will be inspired to act. It’s about showing what can be done. By bringing together a wide range of alternative mainstream schoolers, homeschoolers/unschoolers/life learners, free and democratic schoolers, Montessori and Waldorf schoolers, we hope that we can learn from each other, and that you as readers will be inspired enough to join in, in whatever ways you feel will make the greatest difference within your context.
This book is a call for social change, a call to help us move toward hope and history and away from determinism. We trust that the conversation will continue.

DEBORAH MEIER has spent more than four decades as educator, learning theorist, writer and public advocate. She has inspired teachers everywhere to create learning environments that foster thoughtful habits of mind, and enhance democracy and equity.
She founded and directed of a network of highly successful public schools in East Harlem, including Central Park East Secondary School, from which more than 90% of entering students went on to college. From 1992 to 1996, Meier served as co-director of the Coalition Campus Project, redesigning two large failing NYC high schools, and creating a dozen new small Coalition schools. From 1997 to 2005 she was the founder and principal of the Mission Hill School, a K-8 Boston Public Pilot school in the Roxbury community.
The schools Meier created are national exemplars of reform. She has received honorary degrees from Bank Street, Brown, Bard, Clark, Teachers College, Dartmouth, Harvard, Hebrew Union, Hofstra, The New School, Lesley College, SUNY Albany, UMASS Lowell, and Yale. She was awarded a MacArthur “genius” Fellowship in 1987.

Patch Adams to Deliver Conference Keynote Address
Dr. Patch Adams
Albany – Dr. Patch Adams, world-renowned speaker on wellness, laughter, and humor as well as on health care and health care systems, will deliver the keynote address Thursday, June 25th at a conference hosted by Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO). The session, beginning at 6:30 p.m., is free and open to the public and will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Albany. Dr. Adam’s topic will be “Education, My Partner & Vehicle for Revolution.”
AERO, a not for profit organization, provides information, resources and guidance to families, schools and organizations regarding their educational choices. AERO disseminates information internationally on topics such as homeschooling, public and private alternative schools, and charter schools.
On June 25th evening session will feature, in addition to Dr. Adams, local folk musicians Cavanaugh & Kavanaugh and a welcoming address by Albany Mayor Gerald D. Jennings. A local high school student from Harriet Tubman Free School, Kristin Diodonet, will discuss the current and future state of education from a students’ perspective.
The June 25th conference will welcome over 400 participants from around the United States and Canada to explore the wide range of existing and potential alternatives to the current mainstream and standardized approach to education in America.
In addition to Patch Adams, pioneers in educational alternatives from around the nation will be present including:
- Deborah Meier, a leader in public school reform and author of many publications including Many Children Left Behind;
- Ira Shor, professor and author who worked intimately with Paulo Freire including the collaboration, A Pedagogy for Liberation;
- Ron Miller, scholar and author of Free Schools, Free People and other works;
- Susan Ohanian, long time teacher and prolific author;,
- Anthony Dallman-Jones, president of the National At-Risk Education Network;,
- Local educators Joan Lawson (HVCC), Chris Mercogliano (long-time director of The Free School and author of In Defense of Childhood), and
- Mary Leue (founder of the United States’ longest running inner-city democratic school, The Free School).
