A Look Back at the Founding of Four Alternatives with Arnie Langberg
From the original workshop description:
I will present the four alternatives that i have helped to start, beginning with the Iota Society in Lynbrook, NY, in 1957, then the Village School in Great Neck, NY, in 1970, Mountain Open High School in Evergreen, CO, in 1975, and High School Redirection in Denver, CO, in 1988. I hope that the audience will ask questions, make comments, and help me to look for patterns that we can discuss further in a workshop session.
Part 2 will be practical skills for starting a school, building on the results of the presentation.
Arnie Langberg has just begun his second half-century as an educator. He discovered the need for alternatives while an undergraduate at MIT and has helped to start four public alternative schools: The Iota Society (Lynbrook, NY, 1957), Great Neck Village School (Great Neck, NY, 1970), Mountain Open High (Evergreen, CO, 1975), and High School Redirection (Denver, CO, 1988). Two of these schools are still in operation; Great Neck Village School beginning its fortieth year, and Jefferson County Open School (formerly Mountain Open High) entering its thirty-fifth.
Langberg is currently working on the Harmony Project, which provides professional artists as partners for teachers in under-served schools. He is on the board of a number of educational projects and teaches an action research course at the University of Denver. Langberg has consulted in Siberia and taught philosophy in a university in China.
